Avoid These Common Mistakes For Your Upcoming Phone Interview

-

Phone interviews are a necessary part of the job application process. Many hiring managers use phone interviews to screen their first round of candidates, saving in-person interviews for the finalists.

Most of the mistakes that people make during their phone interviews are completely avoidable. Here are some of the most common mistakes that people make during phone interviews, and how to avoid making them.

Background Noise

Your interviewer does not want to hear your dog barking or your children fighting. These are distractions that make it appear as though you do not have your life in order – and could cost you this opportunity.

This is your first chance to establish a connection- Make it count by making a good impression. Find a quiet space for your interview that is free of background noise and distractions. Keep the attention on you and not the chaos of your personal life.

Multitasking

Interviewers can tell when you are distracted. Set aside time for your interview and be focused. Don’t use the time to file your bills, make breakfast, feed the dog or, even worse, use the restroom.

Use the quiet place you have chosen for your interview to sit down and be fully engaged with the interviewer.

Being Late…or Too Early

It sounds simple but being on time and prepared can be the difference between success and failure. Respect your interviewer’s time by being punctual. Remember that your lateness can disrupt scheduling for the entire day, for multiple people. This is not a good first impression.

Similarly, being too early can also be disruptive. Don’t make them have to tell you that they aren’t ready for you yet. It can make you seem impatient or pushy.

Not Asking Questions

Remember that the interview is not just for them, it is also for you. Demonstrate your interest and investment in the position by asking questions during the process. Your questions should reflect your understanding of the company and the requirements of the position. A lack of questions can come across as indifference.

Being Low-Energy

Don’t begin your interview with complaints about how tired you are or how you think you need a cup of coffee. You are going for a great first impression, so you should be energetic and enthusiastic.

Being Unprepared

Make sure that before your interview you gather all the documentation you may need. You should have a copy of your resume on hand, as well as any notes you may have taken about the company interviewing you.

Having a couple of questions ready to ask is always a good idea. Be prepared to answer questions about your past work experiences, your education, and skills.

The truth is, even hiring managers tend to dread telephone interviews, but they are an important part of the process.

Don’t waste time thinking about how much you hate talking on the phone. Instead, focus your energy on making sure your phone interview goes great so that you can move on to the in-person interview and land the job you want the first time.
