As children, we never really had the social skills to evaluate our actions or emotions. Virtues like maturity and patience begin to develop as we grow. Even though adults are supposed to have a better idea about appropriate behavior at work, many people still seem to behave like a cranky four year old. Research from CareerBuilder shows that 3 out 4 employees have witnessed childish behavior with among their colleagues in the workplace. Though we are all human and likely to make mistakes, habitual childish behaviours don’t make a good impression.
Some of these habits include:
Disrespecting common areas
Having common areas at work can be great, but not respecting certain rules can lead to bad outcomes. If you’re someone who constantly keeps the bathrooms dirty after they use it, leaves food behind or doesn’t clean up after themselves, then you’re bound to have an unfavourable reputation.
Being unhelpful
Working in a team is extremely important. If you do not help your coworkers or are self centered then, you will be despised and frowned upon at work. When you are not willing to help someone in need you keep your team from achieving its absolute potential and therefore showcasing your immaturity.
Blaming others
If you’re a normal human being, you’re bound to make mistakes. Pointing a finger at someone else when something goes wrong is never a good idea. It’s best to be a grown up and admit fault. Your colleagues will not trust you if they know that you are likely to turn on them.
Gossiping
Trust and respect are the foundations of a good team. Spreading rumors and talking badly about your coworkers is a slippery slope. Just because talking makes the day go by quicker, doesn’t mean gossip should be included.
Every once in a while a little banter can be harmless as long as you respect boundaries. It’s okay to let your inner child press the horn but never let them take the wheel.
